My name is Melissa, and I am a proud Mum of two children with additional needs, Dion (11) and Nikita (6). Nikita has Down syndrome, and it’s been a massive learning journey these past 6 years. Both of my children are a huge part of what drives me every day. To be the best version of myself and provide them with inclusive opportunities.

Living in a small town, I experienced challenges with inclusion, particularly around having Nikita accepted into local daycare centres. While my journey may not reflect the experiences of all families raising children with additional needs, I believe there is still important work to be done across Aotearoa/New Zealand to improve inclusion.

My experiences have ignited a strong passion within me, to advocate not only for my own children, but for others like them and their whānau/family.

Being part of a community that uplifts and empowers one another, is incredibly meaningful. And I do not see my role with NZDSA as “just a job” – I truly see it as a privilege to be part of such a dedicated and inspiring team.
