I have Down syndrome

People with Down syndrome enjoy amazing and exciting lives around New Zealand. Some might achieve extraordinary things at work, in sports or the arts, while others prefer the quiet life in their community, simply enjoying their family and friends.

We know people with Down syndrome of all ages, like to see stories about other people with Down syndrome, so this section of the website, as well as our quarterly journal, which is dedicated to you telling your stories.

The NZDSA has created a self-advocacy group called STRIVE made up of young people with Down syndrome who want to encourage others to reach their full potential, and the STRIVE team is giving us directions on what you like to see on your website.

This page will also include links to people and organisations in your own area that might be helpful to know.
And don’t forget, if you have a story to tell, please contact the NZDSA and let us know. We’d love to hear from you.

STRIVE

STRIVE is a team of people with Down syndrome who are a members advisory and leadership group who advise and support the New Zealand Down Syndrome Association board and are ambassadors and advocates for people with Down syndrome.

Human Rights

Sometimes it may be just little things, and people who are trying to help, but are taking away the ability of the person with Down syndrome to make their own decision.

In other cases, their human rights are being denied by constitutional rules or legislation.

To prevent this happening and to protect the rights of all people with a disability, the United Nations in 2006 agreed on a Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which was signed by 163 countries, including New Zealand.
